Shaker Museum and Retreat Center Enfield, NH

Each autumn, WRW invites grads to attend a special week-long writing retreat. Years past we've taken our retreat from New England to the desert of Arizona and volcano country of Oregon. In 2010 we return to October in New England, possibly peak leaf week, and the special Shaker Museum and retreat center, an intimate setting with a history that goes back almost 250 years.

You'll have a private room and bath in a historic house (open to our group only), three meals daily, and plenty of time to write, workshop, and experience the stunning history of Enfield, NH., in a New England October. In addition to museum and garden tours available, we can point you to many local attractions. But most of you will take this time to escape from your routine and write with intensity while someone else cooks for you, surrounded by other writers and a professional staff ready to brainstorm, troubleshoot, laugh or listen.

In addition to the retreat, we are offering an intense weekend workshop experience prior to the start of the retreat. Jason Sitzes (writer, indie editor and Writers Retreat Workshop Director) and Lorin Oberweger (writer, indie editor and founder of Free-Expressions) will lead a workshop on manuscript revision. Once your manuscript is complete, it's time to dig in and make those final checks. Your story is there... now what? What areas of the novel need your attention? How do you check consistency and logic of layers and subplots, and overall clarity? When you reached the end the entire beginning changed... how do you approach the untamed rewrite? We'll help you approach this revision (and all others after) with confidence, and offer tools to make sure your every moment of revision is time well invested. It's a time for you to give to your writing career and nurture your inner artist. If you haven't joined us for a while, we hope you'll experience with us the intensive revision weekend and week-long writing retreat.

The weekend workshop, open to the public, is structured and work-intensive. During the retreat, there is very little structure to the week. We eat together, laugh together, write together, and live together. WRW/BONI staff members will be on-hand to run optional daily Diagnostic and Troubleshooting sessions. A perfect follow-up to WRW 2010. Remember, space is very limited.

If you come for the retreat week, you'll have the opportunity to win the Golden Cluck Award. The winner takes home the Golden Cluck now residing in Ohio, via Kansas, Maine, Illinois, the Virgin Islands, Arkansas, Oregon and Nashville.

About Shaker Museum

Nestled in a valley between Mt. Assurance and Mascoma Lake, in Enfield, New Hampshire, the Enfield Shaker site has been cherished for over 200 years. A place so beautiful, the Shakers called it "The Chosen Vale."

Explore the Museum's herb and flower gardens, fields and hills. Enjoy exhibits, special programs, concerts, guided tours and craft demonstrations. Hike to the Shaker Feast Ground for a spectacular vista of the Shaker Village nestled along Mascoma Lake. Shop at the Museum Store, filled with Shaker-inspired reproductions, books, local crafts and farm products, as well as products from the Museum's renowned herb garden.

Nestled in a lush valley between Mt. Assurance and Mascoma Lake, it is easy to see why this site has been cherished for two hundred years. Founded in 1793, this village was the 9th of 18 Shaker communities to be established in this country.

Each year, the Museum captures more of the Enfield Shaker heritage to preserve for present and future generations. Through the efforts and support of hundreds of volunteers, the Museum purchased the Laundry/Dairy Building in 1991. In 1993, the Museum acquired the Stone Mill Building, the West Meadow Barn and the 18 acres of land surrounding them, and an illustrative collection of Shaker artifacts. An additional 1100 acres of Shaker fields, pastures and forest were purchased by the State of New Hampshire and are now permanently protected from development with guaranteed public access for recreational purposes. In September of 1997 the Museum was able to purchase four more buildings and 8.54 acres of the core of the village. This purchase included the Shakers' East and West Brethrens' Shops, the LaSalette's Mary Keane Chapel, and the centerpiece of the Enfield Shaker community, the spectacular 1841 Great Stone Dwelling - the largest Shaker dwelling ever constructed. The most recent purchase by the Museum was the 1880 Ministry House purchased in 1999.
